When you compare your day with Instagram: what stays outside the frame

You watch a beautiful video, and your own morning suddenly seems less organised. This article does not tell you how to feel or whom to unfollow. It offers questions to help you decide what you want to bring from social media into your day.

Separate one idea from a whole life

Name only what you can actually see in a post: clothes, one room, a recipe, a brief moment. You need not imagine the rest of the creator's day. Equally, one photo of you does not show everything that came before it.

If you like one idea, keep just that. A beautifully laid table does not require you to adopt the shopping list, lifestyle or morning schedule of the person in the picture.

Ask a question before saving

When saving your next video, ask: do I actually want to try this, or do I simply enjoy looking at it? Both answers are fine. Not everything you admire needs to become a plan for your home, body or calendar.

You could make two categories of your own: inspiration to enjoy looking at, and things to try. This is a decision-making suggestion, not a rule for using the app.

Add your own circumstances

If you want to try something, consider your time, money and interest. You might choose one dish from an elaborate dinner, or take only an arrangement idea from an expensive room makeover, using things you already own.

Try three questions:

  • Do I want this even if I show nobody?
  • Does it fit my current time and budget?
  • What can I leave out and still enjoy it?

If your answer is to do nothing, you do not have to fix that by buying something. A post can remain just a post.

Decide what you want to share

You can show a lovely moment and keep the rest private. You do not have to post evidence of mess, tiredness or a difficult day to make your profile authentic enough. Nor do you have to turn your private life into a story for an audience.

If someone else appears in a photo, agree on whether they want it published. Your own experience and shared privacy may have different boundaries.
